The Glory of the Vinyl Record

I fully subscribe to the lyrical line from Clint Black’s musical arsenal, “ain’t it funny how a melody, can bring back a memory…. Take you to another place in time, completely change your state of mind”. This is true of ALL music at any given time. The ability of a certain group of notes, performances, and atmospheric surroundings, to alter your “state” of being, both physically and emotionally, is the greatest gift that I believe exists. To capture these moments is capturing the present and passing it to another set of people, or yourself (considering you are not the same person after that moment is gone), is a history book with no words. Well… maybe lyrics… but you catch my drift right? Music is a language that transcends boundaries. Both physical and language. It brings people together. I can put on Beethovens 8th and it’s like we are in Germany, together, in the 19th century. Spin some Maiden, and I am in the middle of a screaming, swaying crowd in England circa 1980. Turn up the speed and drop 78 revolutions per minute, and you are in Sam Phillips Sun Studios, Memphis TN. with Bill Black, Scotty Moore, and an unknown truck driver named Elvis Presley at the birth of an entire new genre’ in 1954. Turn the speed down, back to 33.3 and go from 12 inch to 10 inch, and you can be with the first lady of big band swing, Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff and her band leader Les Brown, swinging to some of the most memorable wartime tunes in our countries history. I can literally “feel” what that era felt, looked like, and appeared to be. And people say that time machines don’t exist….

This Blog is going to be kind of like Neil Peart’s website, when he was alive, (my God I still cannot believe he is gone). A journal of travels. Travels not in the physical sense like him, but in the musical. Physically all I need to do is slide on my rolling chair over to the appropriate section of my collection and Volia’! A new journey awaits. I want to pass on my love of this media, and hopefully connect with people. Make some new friends, contacts, business partners. Please feel free to contact me. All inquiries are welcome. Yes, even most importantly correcting me if I am incorrect in the information presented. Some of the greatest things to come along in life are by mistake. The Marshall Sound, The Les Paul Burst, etc.

My journey began with my brother Drew spinning Zappa, John Denver, George Winston, Jean Luc Ponty, and Jethro Tull. He was essential in blossoming my obsession. Because of the diversity of his tastes I am a well rounded listener and student of music. I listen to and collect it all! Classical to Rap(early and respectful). Metal to New Age. Ethnic to Jazz. Rockabilly to Rush. Big Band Swing to Surf. Experimental to Zappa. Country to Punk. Christmas music to 80’s Electronic. Its all there, and it all matters in the big game.

This site will share a blog (always hated that word), pics from my collection, videos of me rambling about odds n sods, quotes from my hero Neil Peart, and most assuredly a place to buy records. Both vintage and new. Please come back for weekly posts and I HOPE to hear from all who come across this website.

The Championing of a record store, both online and brick and mortar, is a long time goal of mine. I hope to realize that dream through this website and online stores within the cyber community. The resurgence of vinyl is just fantastic. New colors, new artwork, new artists, new presses, new people all trying to get involved. I am there with you all. My 40 years of collecting has finally seen its direction. As Carl Sagan once said in the Cosmos Series….. “Come with me”!
